Bubba Gump-ing!
Last night I went for birthday dinner #4 at Bubba Gump in Greenbelt 3. I've always seen it around, and I've wanted to try it out sometime, and of course we've all heard it in the Forrest Gump movie, but last night was my first time there.Labels: birthday, bubba gump, food, restaurants, reviews

cravings
Yes, there are times when I feel like eating a specific cuisine (say, Japanese, the cuisine I most automatically look for when eating out) but I've never really had cravings, in the strictest sense. You can ask anyone in my office. Every day when lunch time comes and they ask where I want to eat, I just shrug and say, "Anywhere." If nobody speaks up, then maybe I'll step up and suggest a place just to get us going.
But today... Today was different.
I craved Burger King's onion rings.
I was plurking as usual when Aileen mentioned that she was in Burger King. Suddenly, I wanted to eat lunch at Burger King, too. Suddenly, I wanted BK's onion rings. And, suddenly, I was excited to go to lunch!
Until my officemates reminded me that there was no Burger King anywhere nearby.
HUWHAT?! IS NOES!!! But I wanted onion ringsssss!!!
My officemates suggested that I go to Brothers Burger instead so I could get my onion rings. BUT NOES! Brothers is a good burger place and all, but today I wanted Burger King onion rings. :(
I was so disappointed. We went to the cafeteria to eat, and I didn't have an appetite. My food would've been okay, I suppose, if only I wasn't wishing that it was something else.
I went back to work, but I decided: I was going to have my onion rings. I never eat dinner out before going home (unless that dinner was to be followed by a movie with friends or something) but this time, I was going to eat out, and I was going to get my onion rings!
And I did. All peoples of the world rejoice!!!
Last week, I was supposed to get a free meal here in Burger King (and then I was supposed to blog about it) but I never ordered my free meal. I did blog about staying in Burger King, though, but since I didn't eat anything, I had mothing to say about the food.
I think the food part comes now. Haha!
I was happy with my Whopper Jr. (which had just the right amount of yummy veggies in it) and I had my Coke, and I had my onion rings!!
On a side note, the single-serve softdrink cup is now HUGE! I mean, okay, it's not phenomenally humongous, but, compared to the usual Filipino size of drinks, it's pretty big. And okay, maybe they've been like that for a while now, but it's been more than two years since I last ate at Burger King, and at that time their single serve drink cups were the itty bitty ones.
I love the cellphone recharging station here in Trinoma, by the way. As opposed to the usual thingamajig attached to the wall, and with cords hanging out of it, the recharging station here looked pretty nice. It's wood and stuff. I can't take a photo now, but I'll come back someday to do just that.
Oh, and the "friendly Burger King crew" was definitely friendly. They rock.
Ahhhh. So, yes. Here I am at Burger King, blogging happily. I'll finish my dinner and then go home, finally satisfied that I had my ONION RINGSSSSZZZ!!!

Food Review: Cyma Greek Taverna
I left Burger King to meet with the amigas, and we made our way up to Trinoma's fourth floor to eat atCyma Greek Taverna, a Greek (duh!) restaurant.Today (or yesterday, since my clock tells me it's the 3rd of August already) was the first time I ate there. I already eat Mediterranean food, but, honestly speaking, I'm not that much of a raving fan. I like it, yes, but it won't pop into my mind when friends ask me where we want to eat.
Ah, but I think that changed today.
The food in Cyma is superb! Read full post...
We started out with Saganaki, an aromatic cheese-based appetizer. I'm not sure what cheeses they used, but I'm sure it was more than one kind, and I'm sure there were Feta cubes in there...CHEESE!!! I LOVE it. When our server brought it to our table, I scrambled to get my camera, but by the time I had it on, the saganaki had already been flambéed, the crew had shouted "OPA!" and our server was already drizzling it with lemon. *sigh*

Next up: Spinach and Artichoke Fondue.
Again, CHEESE!!!
That by itself made me happy, but the spinach and the artichoke made me even happier. I don't get to eat artichoke frequently, so of course I enjoyed this dish very much.
It goes really well with both the garlic bread and the pita bread that comes with it. I can't decide which one I like better. I love the grilled taste of the garlic bread, and I liked the pita bread for...being pita bread. Haha!
Before we move on, can I just say that I LOVE Cyma for serving drinks and appetizer first before the main course, just as ALL restraunts should be doing? A lot of restaurants can't seem to grasp the fact that appetizers should go first. And that it should be finished before the main course is served. Ah, but Cyma got it, thank God.
Our main courses were: Baby Clams Angel Hair (which was basically clams, clams, clams...and a bit of angel hair... and lots of EVOO and lemon), Roasted Leg of Lamb (the lamb was delicious! Tender and tasty. Yum! and of course, Loraine feasted on the potato slices), and Lamb Gyro (yes, we ordered another lamb dish. It was sort of a mistake, but not quite a mistake because it was yummy, too).

Dessert was Flaming Mango. This time, my camera was ready to shoot! ...But I forgot to check the setting... It was set to VGA. Darn. Here's the video, anyway.
Oh, and for drinks I got the fresh-squeezed Lemonade, which is really my drink for Mediterranean eating.
I love it how my taste buds were satisfied, my tummy was content, I had a blast...But I didn't feel bloated. Many thanks to EVOO, Extra Virgin Olive Oil!
In summary: my Cyma experience was fun! Sadly, it doesn't fit into my everyday budget, but I'll definitely back someday. And hopefully soon!
Up next: After lunch we headed back into the mall to get tickets to The Dark Knight. Finally.

Sleep, Rain, and Spying at Burger King
This morning when I woke up it was raining outside, and the weather was absolutely bed-worthy. So I slept in, which I haven't done in a long, long time. Mainly because I always have so much to do on weekends, and my recently-started voice lessons required me to wake up at 6:30 on Saturday mornings. Well, I didn't have lessons this morning, so YEY I slept in!
Eventually, I dragged myself out of bed (but first I plurked and wrote about David Archuleta's new single, Crush) and made my way to Trinoma, where I was supposed to meet the amigas for Loraine's birthday.
I got to Trinoma at around 1 p.m. and loitered around the lobby for a while. Despite sleeping in, I was still sleepy—whether it was because of the rain or because I've been lacking proper sleep the past days, I'm not exactly sure—so I basically forgot where exactly in Trinoma I was supposed to meet the girls.
So, while waiting for them to reply to my text message, I went to sit in Burger King, just in case we decide to have lunch there (since we DO have free food there). Even though I was officially signed up to be an observing blogger in the SM North branch across the road, I decided to observe, anyway.
The place
The first thing I noticed was that the place was clean. I mean, okay, so it was a restaurant, so it's supposed to be clean, but it's just....cleaner than I thought. The moment a couple left their table, this BK crew member immediately went to that table and cleaned it up (thus giving me a place to sit. COUCH!). There were a lot of people, but the place didn't look crowded. Weird. I don't know if it's an Ayala Malls thing or a Burger King thing. Or both.
The service
When I entered, I passed by this girl in a physical therapist's uniform massaging the back of one of the customers. At first I thought it was the customer's personal PT... But then the customer left, and the Massage Girl stayed, and went to the next table. Like, whoa! Awesome! The only other restaurant I know with Massage People was Isdaan in Ilocos. They have them massagers because the restaurant is along the highway, so, naturally, weary travellers needed back massages. But the massages there had a small fee. In BK I think they gave the service for free! (Can't be sure, though.)
Unlike other fastfood chains I know, the crew members at the counter weren't yelling their lungs out at each other with the excuse of communicating clearly. I'm not sure if it's only because my booth was far from the counter or something, but I just LOVE it that no one was yelling. The yelling annoys me.
I was still waiting for my friends' reply when a crew member approached me with a smile on her face and offered water. How cool! Rarely do I see fastfood servers who are nice to people who aren't exactly customers yet. (I haven't ordered yet, of course.)
The food
Okay, here's where I fail. Ahehe. I ended up leaving BK without eating. Eating in Burger King on a very special day would be a bit weird for us, and Loraine had decided where she wanted to eat. Ah, well. I guess I'll try the food again next time. It's been soooooo long since I ate at Burger King! I've always loved their onion rings. And their itty bitty little hashbrowns which are so much more fun to munch on the McDee's has browns. Hehe. It's too bad that I never got to eat our free meal today, but oh well. :)
Up next on this series: I left Burger King to meet with the amigas, and we made our way up to Trinoma's fourth floor to eat at Cyma...

Goya Dark Mint: confession of a chocomint hater
Goya Dark Mint + Sarah Cada = a very unlikely combination. To be honest, I don't like mint. I can drink mint tea and mint latte, yes, but mint itself? I avoid it as much as I can. I only eat Mentos when it's fruit flavor, and I always decline from friendly offers of Halls, Stork and Fox's candies.
Now, chocolate, on the other hand, I absolutely love. I love dark chocolate; the darker the better. And I also love it in its pure form: just chocolate. Eating dark choco with vanilla is yummy, too, as well as chocolate+bananas. Ugh. Talking about it makes me crave it.
But on most cases, though, I don't like it when people add stuff to chocolate. Especially mint. I mean, as much as I love chocolate, I hate, and I mean hate chocolate mint. I've always thought that chocolate mint was a disgrace to the glory of chocolate.Read full post...
That is, until I tasted Lindt's chocolate mint. Lindt makes chocolate that's SO good that I'll be willing to make it an exception to the whole I-hate-chocolate-mint thing going on. My only problem with Lindt is that it's super expensive. I'd eat it if it was given to me for free, but I won't buy it myself.
...And then, a couple of months ago, I stumbled on Goya Dark Mint.
I first heard about it from Ana, who is a total mint lover. At first I didn't pay much attention, seeing as Ana is, as mentioned, a mint lover, so she'll naturally like it. But then one day I decided to give Goya Dark Mint a try.
And, I swear, it changed the way I think about chocolate mint forever.
Goya Dark Mint ROCKS!!!
And yes, this is coming from me, one who hates the chocolate+mint combo.
I don't know how to explain it. I can't put into words why Goya Dark Mint made a chocomint hater make an exception. And I certainly can't explain why Goya Dark Mint is now the official chocolate of my office...to the point that when I bring a box, my officemates clamber to get a piece. During lunchtime today, we all nearly screamed when the last piece slipped from one of my friends' hands and nearly fell to the floor. It didn't, thankfully.
I can still honestly say that I still don't like the idea of mint invading chocolate's glory... but in the same breath, I'll say that Goya Dark Mint is delicious. I can't explain why it's so special, really.
It still is just chocolate. Strictly speaking, it's not exactly the best chocolate in the world. See's still makes the best box of chocolates in the world, in my opinion. And it still is just mint. But somehow, the way Goya did it was different.
So if you're like me, and you don't like chocolate and mint together? I say give it a shot. Of course, I still respect individual tastes, but who knows, you might like it, even love it. And you might even blog about it like me and the other Goya Dark Mint lovers.
Try it, I say.
Take it from someone who used to hate chocolate mint.

Jamaican my burger
...But this post is not about clothes.
It's about a burger.
So my dress has an okay length, but my mom and I thought that maybe it'll look better on me if we had an inch or so taken off of the hem. So my mom had it altered at Alter to Fit in SM North yesterday.
The part about the burger is coming soon, I swear.
This afternoon after a tiring day at work, I met with my mom in the mall and we went to get my altered dress, and, as expected, it looked better.
After that happy event, we went next door to Jamaican Patties Shop & Juice Bar. I've always ordered patties at Jamaican Patties (like, duh) so imagine my dismay when they told me that they've ran out of patties. Okay, so it was very near closing time already, but... I was tired, I was hungry, and I wanted my Jamaican patty!!!
Anyway. the guy at the counter recommended their burger. I agreed because I was really hungry and I didn't want to go to another reestaurant and decide on what to get only to find out that that thing I decided to get was out already. Plus the burger had veggies.
So, burger it is, then.
And, my goodness, can I just say that I loved that burger? True, I was hungry, and most hungry people will be grateful for whatever food they eat but MAN! That buger rocked! And it even had a little Philippine flag on it because June 12 is the Philippine Independence Day.And, yes, that burger made me happy.
And the next time I got Jamaican Patty, don't be surprised if I get a burger. ^_^

so I finally went back to TriNoMa
Since it was only my second time there and I got there early, I decided to walk the whole mall. Yes, I walked all four floors for an hour just to see what shops they've got now. See, my first Trinoma experience was sort of traumatic, and that was partly why I haven't stepped foot in that place for a while. (That, and I haven't actually had time to go malling, anyways.)
Well, guess what: I like Trinoma now. Read full post...
Haha! But I think it's really more convenient for me to go to SM, and I have the stores there pegged, so I prefer that over the newer mall. Ahehe.
The only store I actually entered to look around was (of course) National Bookstore and Fully Booked. I was looking for several Meg Cabot books... Unfortunately the ones available were the Princess Diaries series. -sigh- Sucks. I've wanted to get my hands on the Mediator books for ages. Ah, well. The search continues.
When I got back to the first floor, I got me a haircut at David's, too. (I should've stopped to get a Frapp at Starbucks before then. Hmf.)
And then my friends arrived, and we had dinner at Heaven n Eggs... Heeheehee. I had Twinings Mint Tea and Lemon juice, and Egg Sardou. It's Jerusalem artichokes and shrimp in hollandaise, topped with a poached egg and served on a muffin, with mashed potatoes on the side. Yum.
Heaven 'n Eggs has delicious food (I got to sample my friends' orders, too), but the price isn't...err.. student-friendly. Ahehe. But, hey, I think it's worth it. Beware, though: the service takes a while. But the crew is very polite and courteous and smiling, so I guess that makes up for it. And, yeah: the food is yummy.
After eating, we had so much fun chatting (we haven't seen each other in almost 3 months!) that we didn't notice that it was 10:30pm already. And I was supposed to be at work at 9. @_@
So I went back to Trinoma, and, it went pretty well. Sure, my past frustrations about the place have not been forgotten, but, taking that into account, I gotta say that Trinoma picked its feet up.
And I guess it's safe to say that I'll be coming back.

blame it on spoon-licking
My friends have hailed my house as "the home of yummy food". (That, and "the house of many many many guitars and percs and other instruments".) Well, with my amazing cooking mentor of a mom, I'm not that surprised. My eldest brother, Kuya Jabes, specializes in pasta (though whatever he whips up is yummy, pasta or not). My second brother, Ace, makes a killer pizza, as well as awesome Mex-based fusions. As for my third brother, Tim, he cooks up a mean ticnap notnac! I mean, seriously. Somehow, ticnap tastes different when Kuya Tim cooks it. Why that's so boggles my mind.
ticnap notnac - n. Inverted spelling of "pancit canton", a dish made up of cooked noodles and a variety of vegetables and optional meat (or shrimp). The term the Cada kids use when referring to Lucky Me! Instant Pancit Canton.
"What about you, Sarah?" you might ask. Well, although my cooking abilities were limited to boiling water and cooking rice up until high school, I do have my own niche in the kitchen. And it's not the stove top. It's the oven. And, no, despite my love for pasta, it's not baked macaroni or lasagna.
'Tis cookies.
Yep. Although my brothers are, like, awesome in the kitchen, when it comes to baking cookies and cakes, the recipe book is suddenly shoved in my hands. I don't really know why. I think it started when I was really really small, when I got my mom to let me lick the chocolate-covered spoon she used in preparing brownies.
Baking cookies had been one of my favorite things to do ever since I was a kid. First, because it was a time of mentoring from my mom. Secondly, it was because it's something I could do with my older brothers. (Being an only girl in the family, and the youngest child at that, the stuff I got to do with my older brothers was limited.) And thirdly, it was because eating what I baked was (and is) super fun! There's one book in our kitchen that brings back old memories every time I look at it. It's Cookies for Kids by Better Homes and Gardens. It's the book we've been using for as long as I can remember. I remember flipping through it when I was a kid, not to read the recipes, but just to happily look at the pictures of yummy cookies that my mom made. My goodness. It still amazes me how we're able to keep it until now.
Aside from that book, some of the other most-used baking books in our kitchen library is Chocolate Lovers' cookbook by The Chocolate Lovers, and Mrs. Fields' Cookies.
And yesterday, I found out that Mrs. Fields is sponsoring a bloggers meet-up! Coolness! It'll be at Mrs. Fields, Manila Pavilion on August 21 (Tuesday), 7:00 PM.
Cookies, cookies, and more cookies! I've already signed up, and if you want to join us, just go on over to Blog and Soul Movement and comment on their post about it, or send an email to movement at blogandsoul dot net.
See you there!

check 'im out :: ironchefjabes
Right. So I've been giving out linklove by batches, but for today I think I want to give it to one specific person. My brother.
JB Cada is my eldest brother, a techie, mechie (if there's such a term), chef-in-training and basically your all-around guy. He blogs in McGuyver's Kitchen, writing about...well... food! It's not a blog on how to cook, really. (Not always, anyway.) My brother just likes to write about the stuff he cooks up, recipes he discovers (and tweaks), his experiences in culinary studies, and everything else that has to do with the stuff we put in our mouths.
When I was still a little girl, I always saw my brother to be the guy who loved reading and writing, who easily solved math and physics problems, who tinkered around with our PC, and who always knew how to fix electrical stuff. It wouldn't be until I was nearly graduating from high school when I realized that he could be a chef. And a fine one at that. Before he started attending the Center for Asian Culinary Studies, he played around with the pasta recipes in our mom's recipe box, and later, the dishes he got out of the Internet. As it turns out, my brother had a natural talent for cooking, and I always envied how he could look in the refrigerator, take out leftovers and whatever ingredients were available, and then whip up a classy-looking meal in 30 minutes.Yes. Men are not created equal.
(Kidding. I do believe we're created equal, but just that our talents differ. But that's another topic altogether.)
Hm. So if he was that good before he began formal lessons, what more now that he's on his way to becoming an official chef? Yikes. I don't think I'll be able to eat in fastfood anymore if I get used to his cooking. Harahar. Right now I'm already a pretty mean food critic as it is.
Haha! I'm, imagining myself pointing to fastfood spaghetti and yelling, "This is a disgrace! DISGRACE to the honor of pastaaaaaa!!!"
Just to clue you in on what's going on in his blog (and his kitchen) recently...
He went to this Food Writing and Photography seminar thingy at Serye facilitated by Markku Seguerra & Christine Nunag (read about it!). I wished I'd been there, too, but I was busy that morning. Hehe.
Last week, Kuya Jabes cooked 3 chicken dishes for dinner. Our menu was:
- Steamed Roulade of Chicken Stuffed with Prawn & Asparagus, paired with Shiitake Cream Penne
- Breaded Suprême of Chicken Stuffed with Kesong Puti, served with Roasted Red Capsicum Cream Sauce
- Ballotine of Chicken Stuffed with Apples & Cashews, served with Herbed Mashed Potato and Apple Brandy Demiglace

Ooh-lala~
Are you hungy? I'm getting hungry.
Check out his blog, people! ^____^

Dark Chocolate and Chardonnay
Dark chocolate is actually my favorite kind. My older brother once took home some really dark chocolate, 75% cacao content. Yum, yum... I made sure that I controlled myself to take little pieces and ate them s-l-o-w-l-y. And then I tried not to get some more until after a day or two, so that it'll be a whole new experience all over again.

As for wine... Well, I'm not really a wine connoisseur, and although my tongue isn't trained enough to distinguish what kind of wine I'm drinking, I do love the taste of champagne and white wine. Heeheehee.
| You are Dark Chocolate |

scrutiny: Trattoria Acqua
And now, on to the scrutiny.
At first glance, the homepage looks as what the restaurant and the food it serves probably is--colorful and elegant. The colors don't clash, they all blend well.
I didn't find a lot to scrutinize on this website. In fact, I can only think of two, and nothing major.
1. Redundancy
For the Menu links (not the restaurant menus), they get redundant. Probably recycling the template, but I would rather if I'm onthe Brunch Menu, then the link to Brunch Menu be either dimmed out or disabled (plain text) or simply removed to signify that I'm on that page. But then, there are two other texts that tell me I'm on that page. One on top ("Trattoria Acqua's Brunch" in white that is pretty small) and one below the Menu links (that just says "Brunch"). One "Brunch" is enough. Either they put it on the link, or remove it.
The same goes for the Banquet Menus, though the crime only shows up twice. On a side note, I think it's better if they just keep the white text and increase the font size of that one. And not use white... a deeper orange perhaps.
2. Pictures
They have a very nice picture gallery, and they took pains in taking a pretty picture of almost every crevice in the restaurant. They even have a picture of the view from the place. Why didn't they put more pictures of the food they serve? The few pictures of the food they have on the website looks very delicious. So why not make the web visitors drool more by putting more pictures. A mouse-over thumbnail would be nice.
Okay, I will say the truth. The descriptions of the food below the names of the dishes mean nothing to me. Almost. I want to know how it looks like. I'm guilty of visual hunger. Sometimes, if something looks delicious, I'm going to have a go at it. So... More pictures please.
On to the basics
Links: All are working.
Colors: Not clashing, no blinking.
Up-to-date: Yeah. it says 2006.... I don't think it will have changed that much, price-wise.

sushi luuuuuuv
If there are other Japanese restaurants that you can recommend, comment on this entry please. DiscoverSD has a list of Top 10 sushi restaurants in San Diego... I kind of wish we had something like that, too. When I saw the list by DiscoverSD, I tried Googleing the something similar for the Philippines, but I only found a handful, and the reviews aren't so comprehensive. There were a lot of articles about a number of Japanese restuarants, though...
Hmm... Maybe I should start my own list. Anybody wanna go Japanese foodtripping with me? ^__________^

eat, drink, and eat some more!
If you haven't got any plans for Saturday — or even if you do — check out Dine and Jam.

Dine and Jam is a monthly celebration of the love of music, gift of cooking and joy of friendships. Each month will feature home cooked pasta meals from the Regali Kitchen, and amazing talent courtesy of Tim 4:12 productions.
It's actually a family project of ours. Papa is basically the owner (Mama and Kuya JB are the managers). Kuya JB is the head chef of the Regali Kitchen, which provide the scrumptious dinner. Mama is the queen of desserts in the Kitchen. Kuya Ace is our graphic designer for tickets and posters and such. Kuya Tim heads 1 Tim 4:12 productions, which provide live, relaxing, cool jazz music while you eat. And moi? I handle marketing, guest relations, finances, and all that jazz.
What's so cool about D&J is that it's not just a restaurant. It's not just a gig. It's one big party where family friends share good, clean (and delicious!) fun. And it's even more fun because our friends become friends with each other. Like, my friends become friends with Kuya Tim's friends, Kuya JB's friends' parents become friends with my folks, etc. It's sort of like friendster in real, non-cyberspace life.
And it's just awesome.
Try it sometime (and I recommend this Saturday), and I'm sure you'll have so much fun, you'd wish it happened every week.I know I do.
