There are times when you look for a song that matches your mood, and you successfully locate it in your library. There are also times when you don’t look for the song, but the song literally explodes out from your shuffled playlist and tells you, “I AM THE SONG FOR WHAT YOU’RE GOING THROUGH.”

This song is that song for my September 2, 2010, 11:12 AM.

Marching On
OneRepublic

For those days we felt like a mistake,
Those times when love’s what you hate,
Somehow,
We keep marching on.

For those nights when I couldn’t be there,
I’ve made it harder to know that you know,
That somehow,
We’ll keep moving on.

There’s so many wars we fought,
There’s so many things we’re not,
But with what we have,
I promise you that,
We’re marching on,
(We’re marching on)
(We’re marching on).

For all of the plans we’ve made,
There isn’t a flag I’d wave,
Don’t care if we bend,
I’d sink us to swim,
We’re marching on,
(We’re marching on)
(We’re marching on).

For those doubts that swirl all around us,
For those lives that tear at the seams,
We know,
We’re not what we’ve seen,

For this dance we’ll move with each other.
There ain’t no other step than one foot,
Right in front of the other.

There’s so many wars we fought,
There’s so many things we’re not,
But with what we have,
I promise you that,
We’re marching on,
(We’re marching on)
(We’re marching on).

For all of the plans we’ve made,
There isn’t a flag I’d wave,
Don’t care if we bend,
I’d sink us to swim,
We’re marching on,
(We’re marching on)
(We’re marching on).

Right, right, right, right left right,
Right, right, right, right left right,
Right, right,
We’re marching on.

We’ll have the days we break,
And we’ll have the scars to prove it,
We’ll have the bonds that we save,
But we’ll have the heart not to lose it.

For all of the times we’ve stopped,
For all of the things I’m not.

We put one foot in front of the other,
We move like we ain’t got no other,
We go when we go,
We’re marching on.

There’s so many wars we fought,
There’s so many things we’re not,
But with what we have,
I promise you that,
We’re marching on,
(We’re marching on)
(We’re marching on).

Right, right, right, right left right,
Right, right, right, left, right,
Right, right,
We’re marching on.

Right, right, right, right left right,
Right, right, right, left, right,
Right, right,
We’re marching on.

There I was standing in the middle of the airport, with music beating candy into my ears, bags packed and slung over my shoulder, ticket secured and stamped… and I had no idea what I was going to do in Cagayan de Oro.

Day 1: Itinerary? What itinerary?

You don’t know what we can find
Why don’t you come with me, little girl
On a magic carpet ride

Track 1: Magic Carpet Ride — Steppenwolf

I knew there was a wedding. Of course I knew there was a wedding. That was the reason I was going, after all. But despite the fact that I began researching for this trip months ago when I booked my flight, I never actually made an itinerary. (And I researched for just a couple of hours, really.)

So as I had nice breakfast conversations with Lila and Karen in the food court, at the back of my head I was going, “No, seriously, Sarah, you’re going to Mindanao for THREE DAYS with no plan whatsoever?”

On the plane I studied the two-paragraph article on Cagayan de Oro in the in-flight magazine with utmost concentration. “Magic Carpet Ride” was playing endlessly in my head.

Ah, but at least I knew what I was going to do once I touched down at the Cagayan de Oro airport.

Step 1: Get the bags from the conveyer belt.
Step 2: Meet our Cagayan de Oro hosts at the parking lot. Give them our bags.
Step 3: Embark the jeepney that will take us WHITE WATER RAFTING, baby!

Bring it on, boyeeeeeeeeee!

Track 2: Test Drive from How to Train Your Dragon

Truth be told, I was a bit nervous about white water rafting. I’ve been looking forward to this for months, but I was still nervously giddily excited. As we pulled over at Cagayan River and started getting into our rafting gear, “Test Drive” automatically pops into my head, never mind that it was written for aerial flight.

Go, team!

I, of course, got into the front seat of the boat beside Joppet. When the first bubbling waters appeared, we gripped our paddles, locked our feet, and pumped ourselves up for awesomeness. BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM!!! We’ve only been in the boat for a couple of minutes and we were already whooping!!!

Bugsay!!!

Until our guide told us that that bubbling water wasn’t even a rapid yet. It was just…bubbling water. Ahahaha! Eventually, we saw what a real rapid looked like.

AND IT WAS AWESOMENESS.

Track 3: Machinehead — Bush

After that it was three hours of more awesomeness. True, maybe the rapids weren’t as extreme as the ones you can see in, say, River Wild, but, hey. White water rapids are still white water rapids. Especially when you’re standing up.

I must say: I LOVE THE STANDING RAPIDS!

In between the rapids there were a couple of minutes of tranquil still waters so we could take a swim and appreciate the beautiful scenery.

But when it was go time, IT WAS GO TIME.

Awesome, awesome experience. I want to come back and do it again, on rainy season, please! BUGSAY!

Oh, right, we actually booked a room

Track 4: Tomorrow Morning Comes — Jack Johnson

“When my words kiss your ear, I’ll be right there”

After that morning (and afternoon), we finally checked into our hotel to change. And then it’s off to Victory Cagayan de Oro for Youth Service. It’s always great to visit our churches in other locations, and it was especially fun to see the energetic CDO young’uns.

After that it was dinner at Sentro 1850…

SALAD!!!

And then a quick night out at Night Cafe before going back to the hotel to finally try out the bed. My body was dead tired, but my brain was still on a high, so I plugged in some Jack Johnson to get me relaxing. “Tomorrow Morning Comes” was the last song I remembered listening to.

Day 2 was the wedding

“Love is the answer
At least for most of the questions in my heart”
Track 5: Better Together — Jack Johnson

Jack Johnson was set on repeat play, so when I woke up the next morning, his tunes were still in my ears. I couldn’t help a lazy smile when I woke up to “Better Together”.

The morning saw me just lazing around and dragging myself out of bed five minutes before they stopped serving breakfast in the lounge. And then after breakfast I crawled into bed again before I absolutely had to get up to get dressed for the wedding.

Track 6: Iris — Goo Goo Dolls

After getting dressed (and also being my friends’ fashion consultant) I went to the bride’s suite. Estela, if you’re reading this, I’m sure you already know this, but I’ll say it anyway. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL. I mean, like, WOW.

I sneaked in some shots while Joppet did his thing, before slipping out to help check on the maid of honor. Although I already planned to help out, I did more work than I was prepared for; I was asked to do the bridesmaids’ work! Haha! But it was okay. I had fun doing it.

During the ceremony, though, I dropped the bridesmaid’s hat and switched to photographer mode, since Joppet asked me beforehand to help him out. Again, I had so much fun doing it!

And then I switched to bridesmaid mode again for the reception, before finally sitting down to actually be a guest.

Okay, let’s face it, I enjoy working behind the scenes. Haha!

Track 7: Can’t Help Falling In Love — Ingrid Michaelson

The actual wedding was beautiful, funny, and completely heart-warming. There’s so much to say about the wedding, but I think I’ll save that for later. One thing I can say: when Cocoy and Estela danced to “Iris”, another song was playing in my head. That song being this paragraph’s heading.

Congratulations, Cox and Este. I love you guys!

Day 3. Again: Itinerary? What itinerary?

Track 8: Song 2 – Blur

A couple of friends suggested after the wedding that we go to Bukidnon for food, zipline, and who knows what else. My answer was, not surprisingly, “GAME!” I woke up early for an early breakfast and early bonding with Seneca, a friend I haven’t seen for more than a year. Miss you, Sen!

A couple of hours later, we were on the road to Bukidnon for ziplining!

First up was the 320/150 Zipline. It was short but still fun nonetheless. For me it was the time to test out camera settings. And shot feasibility. Haha!

Harness, check. Helmet, check. Camera, check!

Track 9: Elevation — U2

After that it was get on this badass 4×4 jeep for a wild ride up the mountain for the 800++ km track.

ZIPLINING ROCKS. I have no more words.

And, by the way: this has nothing to do with my post, but IT MUST BE POSTED.

The Tower of POWERRRRRRRR!!!

Track 10: Breakdown — Jack Johnson

We had lunch at the Del Monte country club.

And then it’s back to Cagayan de Oro.

Beautiful sunset at the Cagayan de Oro bay.

When everyone else in the van dozed off (except for Job, of course, who was driving) that feeling came. You know that feeling, right? It’s the one you get near the end of an awesome trip. It’s the one that you get when you realize that you are, indeed, near the end of the trip. It’s the one that makes you wish that your trip was longer.

It’s the one that made me put “Breakdown” on repeat play, from the trip back to Cagayan de Oro City until I went to bed that night.

“Day” 4: There’s always the flight back

The space between / Your heart and mine
Is the space we’ll fill with time
Track 11: “Space Between” — Dave Matthews Band

For an almost completely unplanned trip, mine was packed. But although my trip was packed, there were many things I wasn’t able to do. I didn’t get to roam around the city, for one. I wasn’t able to sample the food haunts that only locals knew about. I wasn’t even able to visit the market.

You know what’s coming next, right?

Yep, this is the part when I say: I AM COMING BACK TO THIS AWESOME PLACE.

I’m studying this, and if things go well, I’ll be singing this next month with a friend of mine. Yey!

Side note: Zach acts, sings, drives, is a geek. I LOVE THIS GUY!!! Haha!

Terrified
Katharine McPhee ft. Zachary Levi

You by the light is the greatest find
In a world full of wrong you’re the thing that’s right
Finally made it through the lonely to the other side

You said it again my heart’s in motion
every word feels like a shooting star
I’m at the edge of my emotions
Watchin’ the shadows burnin’ in the dark
And I’m in love
And I’m terrified
For the first time
And the last time
In my only life

This could be good it’s already better than that
And nothing’s worse than knowing you’re holding back
I could be all that you needed if you let me try

You said it again my heart’s in motion
every word feels like a shooting star
I’m at the edge of my emotions
Watchin’ the shadows burnin’ in the dark
And I’m in love
And I’m terrified
For the first time
And the last time
In my only

I only said it
‘Cause I mean it
I only mean it ‘Cause it’s true
So don’t you doubt What i’ve been dreaming
‘Cause it fills me up it holds me close
whenever I’m without you

You said it again my heart’s in motion
every word feels like a shooting star
I’m at the edge of my emotions
Watchin’ the shadows burnin’ in the dark
I’ve had this album for years now, and every time I take it from my shelves and put it on my player, it almost always stays there for weeks.

The Lion King musical debuted 1997, and is faithful to the 1994 animated Disney film of the same name, save for a few new scenes. Which is awesome. I’ve seen movie-to-musical adaptations that were not executed well at all. Unfortunately, Disney’s The Little Mermaid musical is one of those. This, however, is spectacular. Check out the official website for a sample.

Listen to Circle of Life

Um…yeah. I said that the musical is absolutely faithful to the movie…but there’s one teeny tiny change: Rafiki is turned into a female mandrill. Ahahaha. But I think the characterization is very good, anyway. Still mysical, and still crazy. Haha!

The musical also includes some music from the Rhythm of the Pridelands album. I already liked that album, but the musical renditions of the selected songs are even more awesome.

I’m not sure why, but it’s great for work music! It gets me a good morning jolt at the start of the workday, and keeps me awake after lunch. There’s really something about that ethnic beat and deep harmony. Take One by One, for example. A brilliant, briliant number, and the lyrics are beautiful, too.

Hold on tight, my people / Don’t get weary / Don’t lose your strength
They wanted to hold us back / One by one / They will not succeed / One by One / We will win . . .
We will win / because we know who we are . . .
The color of my skin / That is dark / I’m proud of it

Like I said: BEAUTIFUL.

Listen to One by One

Although I’ve never actually seen the musical, the music affects me so much. Some of my favorite instrumental songs from the movie’s original soundtrack were turned into ensemble numbers, like Nala’s Shadowland. If this song doesn’t tug your heartstrings even for a little bit, there must be something wrong with you.

Listen to Shadowland

The grown Simba also has a solo number, Endless Night, a very emotional but uplifting song. I love, love, love it!

Listen to Endless Night

Aside from being my office music, it also works as a soundtrack to the commute home in the afternoon, since the African chants goes with orange savannahs, as well as sunsets through the city.

Listen to The Lioness Hunt

The Lion King musical. Music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice along with the musical score created by Hans Zimmer with choral arrangements by Lebo M. Directed by Julie Taymor. The show is produced by Disney Theatrical. The music samples in this post were from the 1997 Original Broadway Cast recording.

Track list

Circle of Life

Grasslands Chant

The Morning Report

Four days. Ten tracks. One family on one awesome vacation. Oh yeah!

Day 1
And it’s you and me in the summertime
And all the sunshine banishes the dark

Track 1: Summertime – The Sundays

My brain was a mess. The day of our flight out and I hadn’t packed my bag—although I’d already planned out what I was going to bring, so that was a good thing, right?— and I still needed a couple of new shorts—all the shorts I owned were for use indoors only— and I wasn’t sure if I had any sunblock left and I really needed hair clips, too, and omgomgOMG I’M GOING TO PALAWAN!!! my brain kept repeating.

Therefore, a steady beat was necessary to calm my giddy self. I usually reserve Summertime for travel on the road during afternoons, but, as we flew in the clouds, the orange remnants of the sunset streaking the horizon, this song just felt right.

Track 2: Forrowest – Forro in the Dark from Surf’s Up

It was already dark when we touched down on the Puerto Princesa International Airport. We piled up into the vans our hotel sent, dropped our things into our rooms, and headed off for the city.

First order of business: FOOD. Naturally.

We dropped by the Kapitolyo for Baragatan sa Palawan, “a celebration of life, history, and culture in thanksgiving for the natural beauty and multifarious resources that our God Almighty has generously bestowed upon the province.” We had a heavy dinner of seafood, seafood, seafood, and more seafood from the many stalls of the festival. Tuna, lobster shrimp, manta ray, normal shrimp, squid, and a bit of grilled pork on the side.

After dinner, it’s off to the other stalls for some Palawan culture.

And then coffee and tea at Salo before going off to bed.

Day 2
“What is that smell?”
“That…is wildlife.”

Track 3: Summertime – Moonpools and Caterpillars

Wake-up call: 5:30 AM. But I got up 6:00. Ahahaha. We started the day early to go to the wharf in the town of Sabang. Along the way, we passed through zigzag roads along the mountainside, and straight ones through valleys, karst mountains and nipa huts.

It was awesome to see the villages we passed by. Our tour guide said that most of the them were self-sufficient, and didn’t really need to go to the city proper to get food. Some of the villages don’t have electricity still, so they use solar panels for power. AWESOME.

Two hours later we were on Sabang Beach, which easily became one of my favorites in Puerto Princesa.

Track 4: Island in the Sun – Weezer

I simply HAD to take my flipflops off and walk barefoot on the sand. I simply couldn’t not do it. I mean, JUST LOOK AT THAT!!!

The beach had a resident yellow labrador. I wanted to take him home.

Of course we went for a dip. Fine sands, easy, steady waves, and clear blue water. How could we not?

Track 4: Lion Sleeps Tonight – The Tokens

After lunch on the beach, we got on a boat to go to the Underground River Park, which wasn’t really underground, but really inside a mountain. So, to be strict, the official name is Puerto Princesa Subterranean River Park. Huh.

To get to the river from the beach, we had to walk through the jungle a bit. Monitor lizards were walking around casually, and maybe there were monkeys in the treetops, too, our guide said.

Track 5: Trashin’ the Camp from Tarzan

We had to wait for about an hour before our turn to go into the river, so we went back to the shore. Kuya Tim and I went for a hike, though (literally) up the Monkey Trail. It was just us, the trees, and the monkeys. Clearly, this calls for a Tarzan song.

Yep, all nature and no technology! (Except our camera.) It sounds awesome, yes, but when you’re way up the mountain and deep in the forest, you come to a point when you get a little worried. Especially when you see a sign that says that you’re not so far from the next town. (Or, rather, the town where you were in last before you got to where you are. By boat.) When that time comes, you take a few photos, and then you turn around and hurriedly go back to camp.

And maybe stop for a few photos with another monkey.

And, oh yes: the underground river? Awesome experience! The photos don’t do it justice, so I won’t even try to include them here.

Dinner: Ka Lui. Will write about this is in a separate blog post. Maybe.

Day 3
“Just breathe normally.”
Track 6: Under the Sea from The Little Mermaid

ISLAND-HOPPING DAY!

First up: Pambato Beach for some snorkelling and ooh-ing and aah-ing at the coral reef. To be honest, although I’ve gone scuba diving before, it’s my first time to snorkel over a coral reef. Ahehehe.

Despite the many jellyfish stings I got—don’t worry, they were teeny jellyfish… fishes… whatever—I enjoyed myself thoroughly!

Track 7: Reggae Got Soul – 311 from Surf’s Up

Next stop: Snake Island, a two-kilometer sandbar of sand, mangroves, and colorful fish.

Fish-feeding. Lunch. Walking. Photography.

Track 8: Into Yesterday – Sugar Ray from Surf’s Up

Pandan Island. This be my favorite part of the day. The fishes were much more hospitable, and the sun and the water was just great. If we didn’t have a semi-strict schedule, I would have wanted to stay longer and just lounge on the sand. The next time I’m in Puerto Princesa, I’ll probably skip the other islands and go straight to this beach.

Check out the pandan trees behind us!

We had planned to go to Badjao at Seafront for the sunset, but we decided instead to go back to Baragatan and get some pasalubong. Dinner at Kinabuchs—of course, we had tamilok!—and then coffee at Itoy’s. I’ll try to write about these two separately, too.

Day 4
“You live too far away / your voice rings like a bell anyway”
Track 10: Amber – 311

The hardest part of any trip is packing your bags to leave. (It was especially painful for me, though, because it was at this point that I realized that I lost a bag of souvenirs during one of our adventures.)

And then there’s actually leaving.

Palawan is a beautiful, beautiful place. And we’ve only been to one city! There’s still El Nido, Coron, and the other municipalities of this long island. I’m back in Manila, it’s already started raining, signalling the impending end of the summer, but I’m still listening to summer music—Bob Marley, and soundtracks of Surf’s Up, 50 First Dates, and Cool Runnings. Obviously, I’m still hung over. Haha!

I therefore conclude that I must return to Palawan. Thank you, Lord, for creating such wonderful islands!

True, I’m not studying anymore, but with the opening of the school year on first week of June comes a spike in the road traffic volume. Everyone feels it, even non-students like me. Therefore, in an attempt to have happy thoughts as students get back on the school groove, let’s make a playlist!

Listen to my Back to School playlist

Back to School from Billy Madison
From one of Adam Sandler’s classic comedies! In several decades, I might eventually forget everything about this movie—or not—but I don’t think I’ll ever forget this little song. This be the perfect prologue to our playlist.

School Days – Chuck Berry
“Up in the morning and out to school”
It’s an oldie, but it still rocks. (And rolls.) This was remade by the Simpsons with Bart quipping adlibs in between lines.

Amarillion – Datarock
“I wanna take you out tonight / I wanna take you home from school”
‘Nuff said.

Campus – Vampire Weekend
“Drag my feet along the floor / Then I see you, you walking ‘cross the campus”
And yet another school crush song. Interpret the lyrics however you like, but there’s no doubt that the beat and tune are so…happy. Haha!

Speeding Cars – Imogen Heap
“Now, now, darling, don’t lose your head”
Let’s slow things down with a little Imogen Heap. Not at all about school, I believe, but there are some lines about textbooks and ABCs. Also, it’s a good, comforting song who dread going back to school. Sort of.

Three is a Magic Number – Blind Melon
“And three times one is three, of course”
Schoolhouse Rock, anyone? Haha! I so wish I learned this song when I was having trouble with my 3′s table.

High School – Superchic[k]
“High school could be a mini me of society”
True, that.

School of Rock from School of Rock
“You better get me to school on time”
At first I thought this song was about slacking off, but when I read the lyrics more, I think it’s more about just having fun in school and not be the kid who “got good grades and got no soul”. Yes, yes?

Math is a Wonderful Thing from School of Rock
“Math, math, math, math, math!”
Because School of Rock is so much fun. And so is math, as Jack Black says.

No Such Thing – John Mayer
“I wanna run throught the halls of my high school”
Question: which was more awesome for you? College or high school? Personally, my answer is and will probably always be high school. (College is fun, too, but high school still takes the cake.)

Welcome All Again – Collective Soul
Has nothing to do with school, but has everything to do with coming back. A fitting way to end this playlist, methinks. It’s also a good way to start the playlist, too, but that sound clip from Billy Madison is just TOO PERFECT. Haha!

Welcome back to school, everyone!

I should think of a better title.

If you’re a movie-lover like me, I’m pretty sure that we all have times when we feel like listening to movie soundtracks. Animated movie soundtracks in particular. I’m sure you also have times when you would load the whole Disney soundtrack discography into your player and sing along with the character songs and relive the movie through the music.

I think I’m having one such moment right now. Sort of.

While listening to my music the other day, I realized how a couple of my favorite tracks of the moment were written for or used for animated movies. My most played song of the moment, for example—by “most played song”, I mean the “song I listen to several times a day, for hours at a time”—it’s from a 3D animated movie I watched recently—and by “watched”, I actually mean, “watched three times and keep replaying it in my head”.

So. At times like this, it’s only right that I make a playlist of these songs swimming in my head. I made a pretty long one, but here are 10 of my favorites at the moment.

Note: This is by no means a “music from the best animated movies” list. This isn’t even a “best music from animated movies”. This is just a list of great songs from animated movies, all of which somehow fitting in the indie rock, alternative (and some bordering on country) genre. None of the musical numbers by the characters, too, for now.

Sticks and Stones by Jónsi
from How to Train Your Dragon

I shall begin this playlist with a song from the movie that swooped into my Favorite Movies of All Time list. I loved it so much that even while Sticks and Stones was playing as the movie credits rolled, I was still smiling a goofy grin. And now, every time I hear this track, I can’t help but sigh. Not surprising, since Sigur Rós, Jónsi’s band, does that to me, too.

(And, yes, this is the song I was talking about in this post’s introduction.)

Kings and Queens by 30 Seconds to Mars
from Legend of the Guardians: Owls of Ga’hoole

Yes, yes, I know that this movie isn’t even out yet. But, come on, the trailer looked AWESOME! And, this track? EPIC.

Little Wonders by Rob Thomas
from Meet the Robinsons

To be honest, my favorite songs in the Meet the Robinsons soundtrack are the ones by Rufus Wainwright. But for this playlist, I think Little Wonders will do nicely. I don’t think I’m the only one with a smile and a satisfied sigh during the montage at the end of this movie. Such a heart-warming one!

(Let it be known, though, that there is a scarce supply of Frannylius fics. There’s a whole world of possibilities for that!)

Just Say Yes by Ken Andrews
from Surf’s Up

I had to put something from Surf’s Up in this playlist. I absolutely love how the songs were selected for this movie, it seemed unjust not to get at least one song from it. And since almost all the other songs were reggae and wouldn’t exactly fit in this playlist, here we have Just Say Yes to tone things down some.

Down to Earth by Peter Gabriel
from Wall-E

Peter Gabriel always did make heart-tugging music. Add the illustrated credits at the end of Wall-E? This track is GOLD.

And let me just say this: Wall-E is amazing for affecting us so much even though half of the movie is just whirrs and clunks and robot sounds. (And “Wall-E”s and “Evaaa~”s.)

I Thought I Lost You by Miley Cyrus and John Travolta
from Bolt

I might not be a Miley fan, but this movie gave me warm-fuzzy feelings. Especially since Bolt is an awesome dog, and he has an awesome voice actor (Yey John Travolta!), and I really do love dogs.

I loved Mittens, too, by the way… Just in case cat people are wondering. Haha!

The Motion Waltz (Emotional Commontion) by Rufus Wainwright
Meet the Robinsons

Okay, okay, so I said that I chose Little Wonders to represent Meet the Robinsons. But this track is just too beautiful to pass up. Sorry. Haha!

I also absolutely LOVE Another Believer by Rufus Wainwright. Also from Meet the Robinsons. And the only reason it isn’t included in this playlist is I didn’t want three full tracks in a ten-track playlist to be from one movie.

Life is a Highway by Rascal Flatts
from Cars

I can say with conviction that this song only needs to play its first three seconds to make me smile. And if you’re not nodding your head to the beat by the time you get to the chorus, I’d be very puzzled.

And, hey, who doesn’t love Lightning McQueen?

I’m Still Here by The Goo Goo Dolls
from Treasure Planet

Confession: this version of Treasure Planet entertained me, but it didn’t rank high in my list of loved movies. It was okay. But this song? I LOVE IT. SO. MUCH. ArrrrrrghCan The Goo Goo Dolls ever go wrong?

This was originally a 3D Animated Movie playlist, but, like I said, I love, love, love this song.

Wake Up by Arcade Fire
from Where the Wild Things Are

Since we started with epic music used in movies based on children’s books, it’s only fitting to end this playlist with another epic track. Okay, so Where the Wild Things Are isn’t an animated movie, and this isn’t even part of the soundtrack, but it was used in the trailer. Ahahaha any excuse to include Arcade Fire in this playlist. Yey!

On a side note, though: the Where the Wild Things Are soundtrack was written by Karen O, the vocalist of Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Which makes it awesome.

This week was spring cleaning week. It’s the time in the year when I look my accumulated junk in the eye and say, “YER GOIN’ DOWN.”

Now, I’m not a slob. Not really. But I do tend to accumulate stuff the whole year, and not throw them away when I should. It just doesn’t show very much when you look at my room because I manage to make my junk look…orderly. Sort of. Of course, if you show my room to Monk, he’d probably have a seizure.

So. Junk to clean up? Check. Time to clean up? Check. Music to go with the cleaning? Of course, check!

Getting started
Spring cleaning is a Herculean task. So we need encouraging tunes to jump start the work! This track from U2 does the trick.

U2 – Beautiful Day

This next track is one I heard recently from Psych. It’s used in a scene where Shawn dumps soldier toys on a table and recreates a battle scene from memory. I think I will now and forever associate it with cleaning and/or working.

Southern Culture on the Skids - Camel Walk

Another one from TV, this one was used in Chuck in a scene with Chuck salvaging a pile of computers. In a tuxedo, no less.

Band of Horses - General Specific

Up next, we have the holy grail of disco, the first one in this playlist that actually has to do with cleaning. Okay, so I’m not washing any cars, but you get my point.

Rose Royce – Car Wash

Interlude: Summer!
Let us pause from the working songs for a summer-y song. Since, y’know, there’s actually no spring in the Philppines. Haha! And even if there was Spring in your country, this song will definitely help you keep a happy face while dealing with junk from the past.

Sugar Ray – Into Yesterday

And…FIGHT!
Everybody knows that cleaning is tiring. You’re bound to plateau, or get stuck in deciding whether or not to keep that old keepsake from years ago. So here’s a couple of tracks that sympathize with you.

U2 – Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of

And we have even more U2. You know what? Take a break. Take a breather. Chat some friends up. But always remember to get back to work!

U2 – Sometimes you can’t make it on your own

The title says everything.

Howard Jones – Things Can Only Get Better

And as we’re getting back on track, let’s play some Modest Mouse for more encouragement.

Modest Mouse – Float On

WINDING DOWN
This track is part of my Afternoon Commute playlists. I think it’s a nice way to end a day. This time is no different.

Bloc Party – So Here We Are

So there you have it. My 10-track spring cleaning playlist. Do you have your own? Drop me a line so I can use it next year!

I heard this song a couple of weeks ago in Psych. I gotta tell you: Psych is known to have fun, nostalgic 80s music, but they can dish out some heart-wrenching tunes, too.

So, anyway. In “A Very Juliet Episode” episode of Psych, this song played in the last scene. It goes like this:

So just keep me in the dark
‘Cause I hate this part
I’m not ready to go
And I don’t want
No, I don’t wanna know

As usual, I scrambled to Google to look for the mysterious song. I found nothing A couple of days later, though, IMDB finally updates its info for “A Very Juliet Episode”, and I finally find out that the song is “I Don’t Want to Know” by The Breakups.

YEY!

The Breakups are a rather little-known band, it turns out. Totally explains why I couldn’t find the song. But I’m loving their sound! Their MySpace page has “I Don’t Want to Know”, too. Which is awesome. But I still couldn’t find the lyrics anywhere. Which is a bummer.

So. I did the most logical thing to do: transcribe the song! Haha! In case somebody looks for it using the lyrics, like I did.

I Don’t Want to Know lyrics
The Breakups

Every time I look at you
I can tell there’s something on your mind
I’m not the kind of guy to go
probing when I don’t know what I’ll find

So just keep me in the dark
‘Cause I hate this part
I’m not ready to go
And I don’t want
No, I don’t want to know

Ignorance is blissful and
This I’ll try to savor while it lasts
I’ve had it with honesty
Honestly, right now I need an act

So just keep me in the dark
‘Cause I hate this part
I’m not ready to go
And I don’t want
No, I don’t want to know

Does it show?
I’m out of sorts
Building forts on my knees
So please…

Just keep me in the dark
‘Cause I hate this part
I’m not ready to go
And I don’t want
No, I don’t want to know

Because it’s been half a year since its release, and I still haven’t seen lyrics of it posted. And because I love its happy tune with its sad lyrics.
Nothing I Can Do
by Snowglobe
album: No Need to Light A Night Light on A Night Like Tonight

Tried to help you, girl
But just added to your pain
There’s nothing I can to take that away
you can hate me, that’s okay

And know I love you, girl
Oooh~
Seems there’s nothing I can to show you that’s true
Some things you just can’t prove

How my heart swoons
to much love
There’s only room
for one love

And there’s nothing I can do
there’s nothing I can do
that’s good enough for you

We’re of separate hearts
and that ain’t gonna change
There ain’t nothing in this world to take it away
No, that ain’t gonna change

And you call to me
from that swirlin’ fog of rain
You act just like a stain
as I’m wanderin’ my own way

When my heart swoons
I know, love
There’s only room
For your love

There’s nothing I can do
There’s nothing I can do
There’s nothing I can do
that’s good enough for you

There’s nothing I can do
There’s nothing I can do
There’s nothing I can do
that’s good enough for you

There’s nothing I can do (one love feels like the other)
There’s nothing that I do (our love is like no other)
There’s nothing that I do
that’s good enough for you

There’s nothing I can do (one love feels like the other)
There’s nothing I can do (our love is like no other)
There’s nothing I can do
There’s nothing I can do

(One love feels like the other
Our love is like no other…)

—-
corrections in the overlapping part are welcome
