From Paris with Love (2010) Review
It’s like Taken minus the family drama. Like Shoot ‘Em Up but with a lot more sense. Like 24 minus the split screens, plus bathroom breaks and breakfast. Oh, and dinner!
Press Release vs. Personal Opinion
Since I posted the press release yesterday, I’ll take a couple of tidbits from it and make comments. Haha.
John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers assures a new addition to the elite list of effective pairs lighting up the big screen.
VERY TRUE. I mean, I was a bit worried about Meyers keeping up with Travolta, but MAN I think they nailed their roles. Their characterization was solid and consistent the whole way. I wasn’t seeing Travolta and Meyers; I was seeing Wax and Reese. Character growth was also very convincing. And, you know me, I love it when they do this right in books and movies.
. . . director Pierre Morel (Taken), ensures audiences of a ‘credible comedy with a dramatic story.’
True. Take note: I’m not saying that this is a drama. There’s a dash of drama in there somewhere, I suppose, but I still think it’s not a drama. It is, though, a dramatic story. I’m pretty sure there’s a difference.
And is it a credible comedy? Absolutely! Since I’m already going with food analogies, let me say that this movie is peppered with punchlines in the perfect places. And there’s old school action movie references everywhere, and that makes it so fun!
It’s an action movie.
I felt the need to point this out. Just so we don’t forget.
So it has guns. Lots of it. But since Travolta’s Wax is trigger-happy while Meyer’s Reese is…well…not all that trigger-happy, I think the amount of explosions and gunshots and explosions is just about right. It’s boom-boom-pow! without being too mindlessly violent.
Again, I remind you guys: It’s an action movie. Not a drama. Not a mystery. So don’t take it too seriously. Just have fun with it!
But…
I’m trying to think of something bad to say about it. I honestly can’t think of anything.
Oh, oh, oh! I just came up with something. See the poster up there? See the tagline? Yeah, I didn’t get that. At all. They could’ve come up with something better.
Ah, but that’s not actually part of the movie, now, is it?
So there you have it. I don’t think I should say anything else. Just watch it. Heeheehee~
