Peryodiko album launch and review

I have to admit that I’ve never watched Peryodiko live. Or otherwise, for that matter. There was this one gig in Saguijo that I went to, and they played (I believe Pupil and Sandwich played that night, as well). But I had been standing for hours, and the heat was getting to me, so I made my way outside the jampacked bar to get a few gulps of fresh air, and eat fishballs while I’m at it. By the time I was ready to go back inside, Peryodiko’s set had just finished.
Last night, finally, I got to watch Peryodiko at Eastwood as they launched their debut album. They were… The band was… Well, let’s just say that I was instantly turned into an fan.
Peryodiko are:
Vin Dancel – lead vocals, guitar
Simon Tan – bass, vocals
Kakoy Legaspi – lead guitar, vocals
Abe Billano – drums, vocals
Talk about an all-star cast. The awesome thing about this band is: although they’re all already accomplished musicians from other bands, Peryodiko is a whole new band with a whole new sound and all new awesomeness.
They rock out live, and their album is just as good. (You can check out my rough videos taken during the album launch at the end of this post.)
I originally wanted to do a song-by-song review, but I scrapped my initial draft because I ended up typing “awesome” and “rocking” and “genius” and “GAAAAAAAH I LOVE IT!” way too many times.
So, basically, all the songs are awesome and rocking, with catchy melodies, melt-in-awe riffs and genius lyrics… GAH. I now have it on repeat play.
“Pikit” jump starts the album before melting into  “Agawan Base”, the first single (whose melody is  really LSS-worthy, I swear). The beautifully painful “Tayo”, and the equally bewildered “Lihim” (yep, it’s a sad song, despite the absence of the mellow beat) come next. Most of the songs have wonderful wordplay involved one way or another, but I think “Huminga” is the one with the most delightful alliterations, which of course makes me want to memorize the thing.

“Milenyo”, named after the devastating typhoon in 2006 (aka Xangsane) feels like the calm after a storm, hopeful and saddened at the same time. The upbeat “Piraso” reminds me of Jason Mraz for some reason… Might be the groovy beat and the fast singing? I’m not really sure, but I am sure that I love it.
In the album launch, the band dedicated “Paglaya” to the late FrancisM, and I think it’s totally fitting, as the Freeman would most likely say something like that, as well. Anthemic and rousing,”Paglaya” is one rocking wake-up song.
“Kumapit Ka Tuwing Lunes” is my favorite song of the moment. I don’t think it quite beats my favorite song of all time (Lightyears by the Eraserheads), but it definitely gained  a solid spot up there in my list. No words can do it justice. Just listen to it yourself, and give it some love.
“Bakasyon” is another song for the bewlidered and frustrated, but this is not just another Lihim. It’s an awesome song by itself, I tells ya. And also as catchy as Agawan Base. Hehe.
“Walang Kapalit”, the final track is fitting to be where it is, at the end of the album, because it’s a song about inevitable bittersweet endings, and hope for what’s coming.
Oh, wow, lookit. I ended up writing something for each song, after all.
So, right. I don’t think I need to say a lot more, except for: BUY THE ALBUM. The number of copies are limited for the initial production run so the album will not yet be available through the record bars.
